Tony Dyas was an IC1 male who in November 1991 was arrested by D.S. Ted Roach and D.C. Mike Dashwood for dishonest handling of stolen goods in his home.
When searched by Roach and Dashwood, Dyas' house was found to contain numerous electricals reported stolen together with a series of stuffed toys. When questioned as to how these he came into his possession, Dyas was unable to confirm and gave numerous excuses that included former tenants of his house still having access to the property with old sets of keys. A further search of the basement discovered an antique set of silver cutlery stolen in a robbery where the owners were tied up and beaten.
On arrival at Sun Hill Police station, Dyas surprises Sgt. Matthew Boyden by requesting a copy of the PACE guidelines and refers to this in his subsequent interview. Despite initially declining a solicitor, he becomes agitated in his interview and requests a 'barrister'.
At Roach's suggestion, Boyden befriends Dyas, getting him a cup of tea during the lengthy wait for a solicitor to arrive and whilst talking in his cell, Dyas reveals he acquired the stolen cutlery from two men called Rossetti and Morris who had come down from Milton Keynes. The information leads to Buckingham Police arresting them both. (Balls In The Air)
