The Bill is a long-running police drama series from the UK. Set at Sun Hill Police Station in London's East End, the program covers the activities of both detectives and uniformed police officers.
The Bill was created by writer Geoff McQueen. The series was based on a one-off television play called "Woodentop" as part of Thames Television's Storyboard series in 1983. The play, generally considered today as a pilot for The Bill, featured a young probationary police constable, Jim Carver, on his first day on the job at Sun Hill. In 1984, Thames created a series based around Sun Hill, and several characters from the pilot made the transition to the series.
