PC Phil Young is a character from The Bill.

Profile[]

PC Phil Young transferred to Sun Hill in 1989 alongside P.C. Dave Quinnan but unlike Quinnan, Young never really fitted in at Sun Hill. He was too sensitive for the rough and tumble of station life, and couldn't really join in the comic badinage that helps keep coppers going in tough times. When he arrived at the station, he was Sun Hill's youngest Constable and the lack of experience didn't help in his work there.

In 1990, Phil was playing cards with Steve Loxton, Tony Stamp and George Garfield and won but was sent all over town by his vengeful colleagues. Sergeants Bob Cryer and Alec Peters eventually found out and Cryer confronted Young about it. Cryer warned him to never play cards on his relief, especially for money, as he considers it divisive.

In 1991, Phil slowly began to suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress and whilst on duty, he investigated a scrapyard to where Loxton was but he ended up getting scared by a dog. It turned out that both Loxton and Quinnan pranked him to which Young angrily went for Loxton by pushing him into a wall. Inspector Monroe gave the two officers a warning and if it were to happen again, he would sign their leaving cards. Monroe later sent Young on sick leave. He later beat up an escaping prisoner.

In the end, Phil began to crack up when he found the body of a fifteen-year-old who had killed himself. He reached out for help from W.P.C. Norika Datta, but when she refused to go out with him he attacked her. He applied for the Shield Training Course but did not get in. He later went missing on his beat and a search party was sent out. He took his own life, feeding exhaust fumes into his car. He was found by Loxton and Quinnan. Cryer and Monroe found a letter written by Young telling his parents that he did his best. Chief Superintendent Brownlow broke the tragic news to his parents.
