Nick Slater was a character in The Bill from 1995 until 1997.
Profile[]
PC Nick Slater arrived at Sun Hill with fellow probationer Debbie Keane, fresh from Hendon. A former salesman, he had a healthy disrespect for authority but still looked up to the seasoned veterans at Sun Hill. Tony Stamp took him under his wing but frequently despaired of the new boy's foolishness.
Confident and ambitious, Nick could sometimes run into tricky situations by running in on an impulse, not thinking about the possible dangers ahead. He wasn't the brightest and lacked guile and political sophistication, so was often an easy target for the relief's wiles. But, overall, there was a strange fondness for Nick at the station.
In 1997, Nick was recommended by Liz Rawton for undercover work to which he became overjoyed. However, he was ridiculed by his colleagues who believed that someone with more experience would be better suited compared to Slater's. Even Bob Cryer had his doubts as he believed that Slater could make Inspector one day, even a fine Divisional Officer if only he did not go down the route of Undercover work.
He found himself in trouble during his undercover work whether it was crashing into a target's car or being strangled over a balcony. Nonetheless, he began to learn his mistakes. After two years at Sun Hill, Nick left to join SO10 after a number of successful undercover operations.
In 2020, actor Alan Westaway shared his memories of playing Slater in an episode of The Bill Podcast.
