Ken Melvin was a character from The Bill from 1987 until 1990.
Profile[]
Finchley-born PC Ken Melvin was a bit of a surprise to Sun Hill. They had found him a likeable enough bloke, but when he revealed he was a Born Again Christian they looked at him in a slightly different way. After all, religion wasn't high on the agenda for canteen conversation, not when there was birds, booze and football to talk about. He was respected and liked by his fellow PCs but frequently spoofed on account of his youth and inexperience.
In 1990, Ken went on a short trip to Ireland but he forgot that he was due in court, putting him at odds with D.I. Frank Burnside, and he was then mistaken for a burglar after losing his warrant card.
In the end, Ken was killed while parking a booby-trapped car in the Sun Hill yard when a bomb went off, and he had no chance. The IRA were probably responsible as the bomb was in a stolen car belonging to a military man. Damage caused by the explosion pushed ahead the planned rebuilding and refurbishment of the station. He was replaced by P.C. Barry Stringer.
He was later mentioned by P.C. Tony Stamp in the episode "Police Powers" when Tony revealed to Sgt. Bob Cryer that Ken would have enjoyed taking the "moral stance" and that it was the reason why he joined.
In 2017, actor Mark Powley shared his memories of playing Ken Melvin in an interview for The Bill Podcast.
