1991 - Almost ruins C.I.D. Operation but saves D.S. Roach.
Maitland investigates an assault by a pub landlord in which 3 calls were made to a pub but nothing has been done about it. At the time C.I.D. have the landlord under investigation. D.S. Roach got angry with Maitland's interference and he goes to the pub himself but gets beaten up. John shows up and saves the day. (Bottle)
1991 - Holds up P.A.CE.
D.I. Burnside wants to question a man about a missing girl, but he is "drunk and incapable" in the custody suite and Sgt. Maitland is determined to uphold P.A.C.E. This leads to argument between the two and Burnside goes to Brownlow to authorise an urgent interview. Eventually after hearing both sides of the story , Brownlow agrees with Burnside and orders Maitland to bring him the Custody Record to sign for the interview. (Episode:Chapter and Verse)

Whilst on duty, John found himself in the wrong when he discovered a serious procedural error meant that a dangerous and possibly psychopathic man had been arrested twice for the same offence and released. (Minefield)
