Profile[]

Sergeant John Maitland arrived at Sun Hill under a bit of a cloud. He previously served at a station in Highbury and at one point, this young sergeant had shopped two traffic cops for drinking whilst on duty. No one could argue that he didn't do the right thing by the book, but the incident left a nasty taste. Maitland first described the relief as being the most laid back people in his life and informed them that he would never tolerate bent coppers and drinking on duty. He also never bared grudges but he would ask to be shown 100% commitment to the job and in return, he would back the officers.

At one point, John was the subject of a juvenile prank by the relief and almost blew a C.I.D operation when investigating an assault by a pub landlord but when D.S. Ted Roach was attacked by a gang of thugs, Maitland waded in to help, and from then on was respected by everyone at Sun Hill as a sergeant who led from the front . He also helped P.C. Dave Quinnan keep his job when Dave was moon-lighting but he asked Inspector Monroe to not tell him that John spoke on his behalf as he did not want to be taught of as a "soft touch".

He was also seen as a career officer with ambition. John was good at dealing with the public, but not always a diplomat when telling older and more experienced officers, such as Tony Stamp and Reg Hollis, what to do. He sometimes clashed with D.I. Burnside on certain occasions whether it was to interview a suspect about a missing girl despite Maitland determining to uphold P.A.C.E. or keeping a prisoner in custody despite the detention time being up as a result of Maitland making a error whilst on custody duty.

Despite being a solid, dependable officer, he never looked to top any popularity competitions, being humorless and insistent on doing everything by the book. John left Sun Hill to take up a teaching post at Hendon as an instructor and was succeeded by Sgt. Ray Steele.
