The show started life as a one-off drama originally called Woodentop devised by Geoff McQueen. The pilot aired on Tuesday 16th August 1983 at 9.00pm. ITV bosses liked everything about the program, apart from the name. The channel commissioned a full length series under the new name of The Bill.

The new police drama proved very popular with viewers and so in 1988 the format of the show was changed to 2x 30 minute episodes (including commercials) each week, to run all year round. Despite losing its ITV Franchise for London and ending transmissions at the end of 1992 Thames Television continued to produce The Bill. In fact in January 1993, the shows schedule was increased to 3 episodes each week.

In 1998 each episode of The Bill increased to 1hour (including commercials) in length. The show ended on Tuesday 31st August 2010. Repeats of the show are still broadcast in the UK. These are 10-11am every weekday (excluding holidays) on Watch. These episodes are then repeated from 6:10am - 11am on Saturday mornings.

Drama show 2 episodes on Weekdays these are broadcast every weekday (excluding holidays) 11am - 1pm the second episode is then shown as the first episode the next day. The Drama episodes are approximately 5 seasons behind its sister channel Watch.
