A Family Liaison Officer (FLO) works with and supports the relatives of victims of crimes such as assault, attempted murder or murder. Any ranking officer can work as an FLO but they are usually a DC or a PC, whilst more senior officers investigate and pass on information about their relative and the investigation. FLOs always work in plain-clothes whether they are in Uniform or CID. They provide good and bad news from investigating officers in the most sympathetic way possible. If a CID case a Uniform officer is usually used as an FLO and are present during interviews, however the officer actually interviewing relatives is usually a CID officer. If a murder enquiry and the body has not been identified the FLO will take relatives to identify the body.
