P.C. Hollis is gossiping in the locker room. Probationer P.C. Able is sent to a pub to deal with a man on valium. The man ends up going to his mother-in-law's house and trashing the place. Able sorts out a fight outside a pub and discovers the drunk he brought in had been robbed. Ch. Supt. Brownlow and Ch. Insp. Conway discuss starting salaries before Brownlow goes to a board selecting candidates for a graduate entry scheme.

- Inspector Monroe is mentioned a number of times as if he is in charge of the relief, but Insp. Frazer does not leave Sun Hill until three episodes later.
- Robert Perkins, who appears as Gower in this episode, would later join the cast as Sgt. Ray Steele.
- Both P.C. Able. and P.C. Ken Melvin refer to the pub that Able attends to, near the beginning of the episode as the Green Man. However, a quick camera angle during the episode shows the name of the pub is actually The Grey Horse.
