Episode Chronology:

A Question of Trust, Part One is the 1415th episode of The Bill.

DS Boulton and DC Skase meet Terry Riley, an informant who tells them about a robbery set to take place that night. Boulton, Skase, acting DI Daly, DC Rawton and DC Holmes are on the observation, watching the robbery unfold. One of the suspects, Anthony Payne, flees the scene and Boulton and Skase give chase. During the pursuit, Boulton gets kicked in the face and he and Skase get separated. Boulton chases Payne across a disused bridge. When the others catch up, both men are in the river, and Payne is dead. Boulton says that Payne fell in, and he dived in to rescue him.

CIB soon arrive to investigate, and Boulton finds that there are a few people at Sun Hill who have doubts about his innocence, even DCI Meadows and Supt. Brownlow. His bullish and confrontational attitude doesn't win him much sympathy either. He snaps at Skase when he learns that his account of the night's events differs from Boulton's. Moreover, Terry Riley comes forward to say he saw Boulton and Payne on the bridge, and claims Boulton pushed him. Payne's brother Steven announces his intention of seeking a murder charge against Boulton.
