DCs Zain Nadir and Terry Perkins are pleased when DS Stuart Turner lets them bend the rules in order to proceed with an investigation into the beating of suspected paedophile, Leo Cross. Stuart ensures he covers his back with DCI Jack Meadows but neither Zain nor Terry realise he is only out for himself. Terry soon discovers that Cross is not listed on any of the sex-offenders registers – but is it just a case of mistaken identity?

After continually clashing with his brother Phil, PC Steve Hunter is distraught when Phil is pleased after hearing Steve has applied for transfer back to Derbyshire. An emotional drive home sees Steve attacked by two motor-bikers who smash his car window, douse him in petrol and light a match. Is Phil about to regret his recent quarrel with his brother?
