Episode 010 is the 1667th episode of The Bill.

This episode's alternate title is A Peg or Two.

As the team hold a respectful minute's silence for those lost in the blaze. Debbie is busy 'finding' evidence against a known safecracker, Peter Grace. He smugly waits in reception with his weasely lawyer, knowing full well (like many other suspects in the area) that the one piece of evidence against him has perished in the fire. He underestimates Debbie's resources when she manages to find a cloned pair of sunglasses he left behind at a robbery. Back at the hospital, Cass and Des hold a bedside vigil, watchful for signs of life from Sam. They are interrupted by Chandler asking Des to speak to the press who want a 'hero' to emerge from the explosion. His concern doesn't wash with Des who knows hypocrisy when he sees it. He walks out commenting that he "feels sick." While tragedy has struck at Sun Hill, crime hasn't stopped on the streets. Boyden is hastily appointed Acting Inspector. Gilmore is more than a little miffed to be sent out on the case of the mysterious hole digger and he barely hides his contempt while he and Jim spend time with an eccentric old man and a treasure map shrouded in rumour. CID is feeling the stress and the usually laid back Duncan is like a cat on a hot tin roof. He and Danny are given a severe reprimand from the DCI and warned to steer clear of suspect Jeff Simpson or anything to do with the case, but when Danny doesn't let it rest Duncan goes for him in an uncharacteristic way. Meanwhile Mickey and Meadows plot to bring the Superintendent to his knees. MIT arrive to investigate the fire and Conway's death.

Notes[]

In the scene where Acting Inspector Boyden begins the minute-long silence at 14.00hrs in the parade room, the close up and distance shots of the clock in the rear of the room do not match.

Sgt Matthew Boyden is promoted to Acting Inspector.

Final appearance of PC Sam Harker (Matthew Crompton).
