- 1990 - Injured in explosion which resulted in the death of P.C. Ken Melvin.
Whilst the Police Station was being refurbished, a car was parked in the station car park and P.C. Ken Melvin was ordered by Chief Superintendent Charles Brownlow to move it out of the yard. When Melvin attempted to move the car, an explosion occurred and injured many officers with Derek being one of them. He ended up in hospital but made a recovery. However, Melvin died.
- 1993 - Becomes the new Community Liaison Officer.
Whilst Brownlow was away on holiday, Derek applied for the position of the Community Liaison Officer and DAC Hicks agreed much to Brownlow's surprise. Philip Cato replaced him as Chief Inspector of Operations.
- 1994 - Promoted to Acting Superintendent.
After Brownlow was transferred to Area, there was a vacancy for an Acting Superintendent. Conway applied but faced competition from Cato and DCI Jack Meadows. However, Conway was successful.
- 1996 - Returns to Chief Inspector of Operations.
Following Brownlow's return to Sun Hill, Conway returned to his duties as Chief Inspector of Operations.
- 1998 - Turned down for promotion.
Derek was up for Promotion but faced competition once again from Meadows, and with an impending inspection from Area, both are out to impress. However, there were some comic and some life-threatening repercussions for them both. In the end, they both got turned down by Brownlow and Derek took it badly. Just as Brownlow was leaving, Derek confronted him and called him a "bastard".
- 2002 - Murdered by Jeff Simpson.
Instead of attending a community meeting, Superintendent Tom Chandler decides to rendezvous with Kate Spears and he sends Derek in his place. While he manages to calm Asian community leaders over the Neo-Nazi march, the night ends in tragedy when whilst getting into his car, Derek has a petrol bomb thrown into his car which then explodes and kills him instantly. Jeff Simpson was arrested for his murder.
