At the start of January 1976, Brownlow transferred back into uniform as he decided that he was better suited there and that his current rank was proof enough that he made the right choice.

By 1984, Brownlow was posted at Chief Superintendent at Sun Hill.

  • 1991 - Questioned by Yorkshire Police about a wrongful conviction

17 years on since his days in C.I.D, Brownlow was questioned by Yorkshire Police about his involvement into a murder enquiry before that led into a wrongful conviction. He was on night-duty C.I.D. at the time.

  • 1994 - Transferred to Area

In 1994, Brownlow was transferred to Area when the rank of Chief Superintendent was facing the possibility of being abolished. He was succeeded by Chief Inspector Derek Conway who, for the next two years, would be Acting Superintendent in Brownlow's absence.

  • 1996 - Returned to Sun Hill

After two years at Area and the rank of Chief Superintendent remaining in the force, Brownlow transferred to Sun Hill and resumed his command of Sun Hill with Conway returning to his duties as Chief Inspector of Operations.

In 1999, Brownlow applied for the position of the Borough Commander but faced competition from his rival, Chief Superintendent Guy Mannion of Barton Street. He later lost out to Mannion.

  • 2000 - Resigned in light of the Don Beech Scandal

At the recommendation of Mannion, Brownlow resigned from the force following the Don Beech Scandal.

  • 2002 - Returned for the funerals for the seven police officers who were murdered

Almost 2 years following his resignation, Brownlow returned for the funerals for Conway, who was killed when a petrol bomb was thrown into his car, and the six police officers who were killed in the 2002 Sun Hill Fire.
