In 1999, Amy first appeared in the episode Father's Day when she turned up at the station looking for her father, after almost 1 year without no contact, to ask for his help after she believed someone was trying to hurt her but later walked out of the station after they argued. Matt later turned up at the squat where Amy was staying but there was not sign of her. She was later seen at a supermarket where he had been shoplifting to which Matt was shocked after he learned that he had a granddaughter called Sophie. Matt returned to the squat where he confronted Amy's boyfriend, Philip Cooper, for ruining his daughter. Amy, Sophie and Cooper were moved into a safehouse with Gary McCann and Dale Smith watching the house. She slowly started to rekindle their relationship. Whilst getting coffee, Sophie got kidnapped but was later rescued after Cooper withdrew his statement. Boyden asked Amy to move in but she refused. He later ordered Cooper to be brought in.
In 2001, Amy showed up at the station to give Matt a card for his 40th birthday but he is away attending an outward pursuit weekend with Vicky Hagen and a group of wayward teenagers. When he returns, he opens the letter to find the address where Amy and Sophie are living and that it is Sophie's birthday in a few weeks.
Some time later, Amy became in debt to a loan shark who was believed to have been responsible for a number of assaults. When Amy is arrested for petty theft, June convinced Matt to talk to her, and when Amy is assaulted by the loan shark's thugs, Matt resolves to pay off her debt himself. When he turned up with the money, he was recognised by one of the men as a police officer, blew a CID raid on the office and left Amy in grave danger.
Matt went all out to protect Amy after the arson attack on her flat. Vick is sceptical of Amy's true motives, and her suspicions are confirmed when she finds her going through her bag. Whilst out on patrol, Hagen and Carver catch sight of Amy and decide to follow her. They witness a drug deal taking place involving Amy, Ashley Mullen and an unknown courier from the estate. Having no choice but to report it, Amy is arrested.
June visited Matt at home to discuss Amy's disappearance, and offers to help with his granddaughter, Sophie. Later, Vicky arrives, but their encounter is frosty, as Boyden still hasn't forgiven her for shopping Amy. With no formal police co-operation, Boyden sets out to find his daughter himself. Police informant Tyne tells Singh that Amy is a drugs courier for Ashley Mullen. Boyden manages to trace Amy, who claims to be in great danger, and begs him to look after Sophie until she has sorted things out.
In 2003, Nick Klein ended up in debt to his dealer Dexter as his drug addiction spirals, but he bonds with Amy, unaware she is none other than Boyden’s daughter. Klein continues to bond with Amy Boyden, and she introduces him to crack cocaine, however he is almost caught when uniform coordinate a raid on the crack house. Despite avoiding one nightmare, he ends up in the middle of another when Sophie swallowed crack and overdosed. Boyden is horrified to discover that Sophie is in hospital after ingesting crack cocaine. Boyden tracks down Amy to warn her off, stating he is applying for custody. Amy is arrested yet again, this time for threatening Cameron with a needle. Nixon and Boyden later discover a car owned by Lenny Kapoor, a man who witnessed a murder that Boyden attended a few weeks earlier, submerged in the River Thames. When Lenny is found dead, Nixon desperately calls Boyden to get him off the streets, but his refusal to listen to his rival results in his death.
It was discovered that it was Amy who arranged for Matt to be killed for his insurance money. She knew that only a sergeant would be called to a suspect package call, and she arranged for her boyfriend, Dexter, to shoot Boyden. Amy was last seen confessing to her involvement to his Murder. She was later sent to prison for conspiracy.
